We All Have Trauma
Each and every single one of us have experienced trauma in our lives. Yep…read that again. EVERY. SINGLE. ONE. OF. US. HAS. EXPERIENCED. TRAUMA.
But I had a good childhood. You might say. I haven’t had trauma!
Trust me, you have. Sooner or later, trauma comes for all of us.
For some, the trauma has been acute or violent. This can include things like abuse, assault, or serious accidents. For many, their traumas are not as direct and obvious. In his book, The Transformation, Dr James Gordon discusses many other life experiences Having a life threatening illness, or a long term disability or chronic pain is traumatizing. Poverty, racism and gender discrimination are traumatizing. Loss of a loving relationship is traumatizing, or the loss of a job that gave our lives meaning and purpose is traumatizing. Long “forgotten” rejections on the playground can stay with us through life. As we age, we will all have to deal with the trauma of losing loved ones, with old age, physical frailty, and death. Yes, trauma is unavoidable.
The good news is we can use self-awareness tools and self care to heal our trauma, from the inside out. Contact me to learn how.
Elements for a Traumatic Event
An experience in which the individual feels helpless
An experience in which the individual experiences intense negative emotions- fear, sadness, guilt, or others.
In a recent government survey, 60% of adults reported they experienced significant abuse and/or neglect in childhood. Studies on adverse childhood experiences reported that one quarter of all educated, financially secure, middle class Americans were as children “often or very often hit…..so hard that [they] had marks or were injured.”
Our society continues to become more and more fragmented and broken as hurt people, hurt people (and themselves).
The power to heal our hurts and trauma is within us. Never give up the fight towards healing and wholeness. Educate yourself. Take small steps. The power is within you, and I believe in you.
